If you wish to become a security officer in Utah, you should register with the Utah Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing by completing the required training and submitting your application form in its entirety. After obtaining you license, you can only get employed with authorized private security agencies in Utah.
Security Guard License Requirements in Utah
The below requirements are set by DOPL:
- All applicants must be at least 18 years old.
- You must be a citizen of United States or must be a resident alien with work authorization.
- You must be free of felony convictions or must clear a criminal history check conducted by the regional department of police and FBI.
- Training requirements: You must finish the required training sessions prior to getting your registration. Your instructor must fill out the relevant section of the application form.
- Fingerprints must be submitted with your submission for a new application. The fingerprint is used to perform a background check.
- Two color passport style photographs
- Is not using drugs or dependent on alcohol in way that can affect the applicants ability to perform the duties of a private security guard
- Applicant should be physically fit and mentally competent to perform the duties of a security guard.
- Be of good moral character.

Training Requirements for Security Officers
Twenty four hours of basic training is required for all unarmed guards. You must certify the completion of training at the time of making the application and a section of you application form must also be completed by the instructor. The course must contain instruction on the following modules:
